Plug & Abandonment
At the end of its service life, a well needs to be properly shut-in. The process establishes a series of in-well barriers, to prevent outlet of well fluids for contamination of the surrounding environment.
It’s a matter of safety
P&A is more than anything a matter of safety – to prevent the wellbore from going into an uncontrolled situation. During the productive life of a well, the system is continually monitored, and maintenance of the wellbore and –head is done in accordance with a schedule.
However, as the well is shut-in, monitoring and continuous maintenance is stopped, and this is why it is prudent to have a well executed P&A campaign, which ensures that the well is plugged effectively.
